Laura Joyce Davis won the Poets & Writers California Writers Exchange Award for fiction in 2013 with an excerpt of her novel about two women who find their way to the depths of friendship and freedom in the Manila underworld of sex trafficking. She received a Fulbright scholarship to research and write the book, and spent a year in Manila working closely with victims of sex trafficking and also interviewing bar owners, customers, pimps, and sex tourists. She was a Pushcart Prize Nominee (2018 & 2009), a finalist for Glimmer Train's Short Story Award for New Writers (2017), a Kimmel Harding Nelson writer-in-residence (2014), a Best New American Voices nominee (2006), and a two-time winner of the Mills College Prize for Graduate Fiction (2005 & 2006). Recently she curated and was a featured author at Medium: Motherhood


Her fiction and creative non-fiction have appeared in Runner's WorldShapeChristianity Today, the Poets & Writers blog, The Arroyo Literary Review, Hobart, A Cappella Zoo, and elsewhere. She studied writing under Anthony Doerr, Yiyun Li, and Victor LaValle. She lives in Oakland with her husband and three children.
