Dan Kois is a writer at Slate. His novel "Vintage Contemporaries" will be published by Harper in 2023. His previous books are "How to Be a Family," a memoir; "The World Only Spins Forward," an oral history of "Angels in America" (with Isaac Butler); and "Facing Future," part of the 33 1/3 series.
