J. A. Bernstein is the author of Rachel’s Tomb (New Issues, 2019), which won the A.W.P. Award Series Novel Prize and Hackney Novel Prize; Desert Castles (Southern Indiana Review, 2019), which won the Wilhelmus Prize; Northern Cowboy (Saint Leo Univ. Press, 2021), which won the Wilt Prize; and Glass Essays (Variant Literature, 2023). His stories, poems, and essays have appeared in about a hundred journals and anthologies, including The Kenyon Review, Tin House, The Threepenny Review, Shenandoah, Boston Review, Washington Square, and Chicago Quarterly. His academic articles have appeared in The Conradian, Western American Literature, other volumes, and won the Harkness Young Conrad Scholar Award from the Joseph Conrad Society of America. A Chicago-native, he is an assistant professor of English in the Center for Writers and Director of Graduate Studies in English at the University of Southern Mississippi, as well as the fiction editor of Tikkun.
