The Laughter by Sonora Jha with Nalini Iyer Author Sonora Jha and her colleague, Nalini Iyer, discuss her new work of literary fiction, which has been described as tense, explosive, and illuminating. It perfectly captures the privilege, radicalization, race, and class tensions that simmer in the world of modern academia and in present-day America. Booklist calls it "a complete triumph." "Readers will become immersed in Sonora Jha’s brilliantly crafted world, which explores the intersection of the politics of college campuses and a wild obsession.” —The Best Books for February 2023, Shondaland. The Birds and the Trunk: A Reading & Gallery Walk-through How do we attend to objects? What do they teach us about how they wish to receive the attention we give them? For this event, visiting artist Max Taylor-Milner—one of the ESTAR(SER) contributors to THE THIRD, MEANING—will offer a set of short readings from In Search of the Third Bird and the related Frye Trunk study, Opening a Pandora’s Box in the Archives of Attention, and invite participants to explore the exhibition. Risk/Reward: On Disrupting Aesthetic Convention in Writing How can we disrupt aesthetic convention without also risking our livelihoods? Risk-taking is essential for innovation, yet when creative writing classrooms privilege a cautioned aesthetics, publishing industry gatekeepers prefer to play it safe, and critics remain skeptical toward adventurous forms, the avenues available to academics, writers, and literary translators to embrace risk remain nebulous. Each of the five speakers on this panel will discuss the specific ways they are building a practice in the classroom and on the page by disrupting aesthetic standardization. Open bar, folks! Saved: Objects of the Dead Reading, Discussion, & Book Signing Saved: Objects of the Dead (Artsuite 2023) is a collaborative book by artist Jody Servon and poet Lorene Delany-Ullman. We often come together in grief, seeking connection, even with strangers, to acknowledge our human suffering. This book explores the universality of how objects embody the emotions of loss and memory. Pairing photography and prose, Servon and Delany-Ullman chronicle the lives, deaths, and relationships of individuals whose objects, imbued with emotional and physical senses, are kept by loved ones as an affirmation of their former lives. Reading, discussion, and book signing. Poet Lynne Thompson will host the event as the discussant. Writing the Earth with Our Whole Bodies This embodied workshop will bring together writers imagining other ways of being in the world and relating to one another. We will focus on issues pertaining to extractive capitalism, labor, and our environment in relation to specific places in our realm of experience. Writing does not need to be a solitary experience. We will collaborate and create a shared library of literal and abstract gestures, images, and words. Each of us will come away from this workshop inspired to generate more work, and feel a deeper connection to our planet, each other, and ourselves. Health & Safety Information: Masks are required. Please avoid fragrances to help make the space safer for people with allergies and sensitivities. Please inform us of any accessibility needs you may have, and we will do our best to accommodate them. The devised theater exercises may include movement and touch. To maintain a safer space for participants, I will adapt exercises for a range of mobility and bodily capacities. Good Actors: A Play by Sommer Browning Good Actors is a one-woman performance of the poet Sommer Browning’s third poetry collection, Good Actors (Birds, LLC; 2022). It is funny, moving, irreverent, sexy, and funny (again). It explores the boundarylessness of genre but also our human roles—where do our roles and performances end and “real life” begin? How do we transition between art and life when life itself is a creative act? The performance is directed and produced by Aaron Angello and features bold, vibrant animations created specifically for the text by filmmaker Kelly Sears. Somatic Spiraling: The Body as a Creative Resource Emily Mundy and Amy Hirayama present an embodied workshop. Often, writing is considered a disembodied act. But the physicality of writing exists on a much deeper level than simply excavating the mind for language, then allowing it to flow through fingers on a keyboard or from the wrist to the pen on a page. In this workshop, Amy and Emily will combine movement, guided meditation, and sensory exploration with generative writing prompts to steer writers through the energetic channels of their own bodies, in hopes of accessing surprising information for their creative work. Health & Safety Information: NWFF patrons will be required to wear masks that cover both nose and mouth while in the building. Disposable masks are available at the door for those who need them. Publishing in Spanish in the United States Literary production in Spanish has a long tradition in the United States, but despite being the country with the second-highest number of Spanish speakers in the world, its publishing industry remains focused on the English language. In this panel, literary agents, editors, and authors will share their experiences about publishing in Spanish in our country. After the event, we will celebrate with music and appetizers. This event will take place in Spanish. However, translated subtitles will be available for the benefit of our English-speaking audience.
