Schools are pushing into the digital era, rapidly expanding their offerings of online and hybrid classes in every subject. But what does it mean to teach creative writing beyond the classroom? What are the affordances and constraints of the online environment? How are traditional practices, like the writing workshop, adapting? Experienced writers, educators, and instructional designers discuss the obstacles, approaches, and developments of online and hybrid creative writing education.

Moderator:

Ryan Sobeck is a recent graduate of Adelphi University's MFA program in fiction. He is an adjunct professor teaching creative writing and the recipient of the Axion Award for Fiction. His work has appeared in Fat City Review, East End Elements, and East Coast Ink.

Belle Gironda is a poet, critic, and instructional designer. She has taught writing, of all kinds, in New York City and Cairo, Egypt. She has a PhD from SUNY Albany, with a focus on writing and new media, and currently consults with faculty on online course design and pedagogy at Adelphi University.

Joseph Rein is an assistant professor of creative writing at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. He is coeditor of Creative Writing in the Digital Age and Dispatches from the Classroom. He is a fiction and screenplay writer whose work has appeared in print and on screen worldwide.

Belinda Kremer, a poet and the poetry editor of Confrontation, was for many years a dual WPA and faculty member. Now a lecturer in the Merritt Writing Program at UC Merced, she is part of the UC's Online-Innovative Learning Technology Initiative. She holds an MFA from the University of Michigan.
