The VIDA Count statistics, among other initiatives, have spotlighted the underrepresentation of women writers as authors, critics, and review subjects in the mainstream media. How does gender parity play out in the world of literary translation? Translators specializing in languages of Asia, Latin America, South America, and Europe read from their work and discuss strategies for finding, translating, and publishing international women writers.

Moderator:

Karen Phillips is the executive director of Words Without Borders.

Hillary Gulley is a writer and translator from Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese. She is the recipient of a PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grant for her work on Marcelo Cohen, and the translator of the anthology Cuba in Splinters: Eleven Stories from the New Cuba. She teaches English at Queens College.

Sholeh Wolpé is a recipient of PEN/Heim, Midwest Book Award, and Lois Roth Translation Award. Her publications include four collections of poetry, two books of translations, and three anthologies. His forthcoming book is The Conference of the Birds.

Marguerite Feitlowitz is the author of A Lexicon of Terror: Argentina and the Legacies of Torture. Among the authors she translates are Griselda Gambaro, Luisa Valenzuela, Liliane Atlan, and Salvador Novo. She teaches literature & literary translation at Bennington College, in Vermont.

Alta L. Price runs a publishing consultancy specialized in literature and nonfiction texts on art, architecture, design, and culture. A recipient of the Gutekunst Prize, she translates from Italian and German, is VP of the New York Circle of Translators, and is a member of Women in Translation+PEN.
