The upsurge in literary work by veterans has sparked an interest in teaching writing to this population, but a less-noted phenomenon has been the recent increase in course offerings in creative writing at service academies and military colleges. A panel of writers and teachers who have worked with both veterans and cadets—those returning from war, and those preparing to serve—put these two groups into new and enlightening conversation.

Moderator:

Mary Stewart Atwell is the author of the novel Wild Girls. Her short fiction has appeared in journals including Epoch and Alaska Quarterly Review, and in the anthologies Best New American Voices and Best American Mystery Stories. She teaches creative writing at Virginia Military Institute.

Kevin Powers is a poet and novelist.

Ron Capps the founder and director of the Veterans Writing Project, a 501(c)(3) based in Washington, DC. He is the author of a memoir, Seriously Not All Right: Five Wars in Ten Years.

Benjamin Busch served as an infantry and light armored reconnaissance officer in the United States Marine Corps, deploying twice to Iraq. He is the author of a memoir, Dust to Dust, and has published in Harper’s, The New York Times Magazine, Prairie Schooner, Five Points, and North American Review.

Katey Schultz (@kateyschultz) is the author of Flashes of War, a collection of short stories awarded a Gold Medal from the Military Writers Society of America and Indie Fab Book of the Year from Foreword Review. Her novel, set in Afghanistan, is represented by Sobel Weber Associates.
