S168. A New Girls' Network: Lessons from the Movement for Equal Voice

Women are still underrepresented in the literary community. The movement toward equal voice is coming to fruition through the collective action of people who advocate for women writers. Join Hedgebrook, VIDA, BinderCon, Hazel Reading Series, and She Writes Press to discuss the replicable, scalable models they use to provide space, support, community, and skills for female-identified writers.

Moderator:

Amy Wheeler is a nationally produced playwright and the executive director of Hedgebrook. An alumna of Yaddo and Hedgebrook, she received her MFA through the University of Iowa Playwrights Workshop. She has taught writing at Cornish College for the Arts and Freehold Studio Theatre Lab.

Shruti Swamy is co-organizer of HAZEL Reading Series, based in San Francisco. Her work has been published in AGNI, Black Warrior Review, New American Writing, and PANK, and she has been awarded fellowships from Hedgebrook, the Millay Colony, Kundiman, and Vassar College.

Stacey Parshall Jensen is a screenwriter, filmmaker, and coexecutive producer/writer at Through the Wilderness, LLC. She writes suspense, action thrillers about women, hope, and justice. She holds two MFAs—creative writing from Hamline University and screenwriting from USC.

Brooke Warner is publisher of She Writes Press, president of Warner Coaching Inc., and author of four books on publishing and writing. Brooke’s expertise is in traditional and new publishing. She sits on the board of the Independent Book Publishers Association and is actively involved with SheWrites.

Amy King teaches English and creative writing at SUNY Nassau Community College, serves on the executive committee for VIDA: Women in Literary Arts, moderates the Women’s Poetry Listserv, and she was the 2015 Winner of the WNBA Award. She also coedits Poets for Living Waters and blogs for Boston Review.
