Is literature an art, or is it a business? Every working writer is in a constant state of negotiation between creativity and commerce, life and work, love and money. This panel explores how literary authors navigate such seemingly opposing aspects of their work. Join writers and publishing industry professionals as we share strategies for balancing the “writing life” with real life—and creating a sustainable career in the process.

Moderator:

Manjula Martin's anthology Scratch: Writers, $, and the Art of Making a Living is forthcoming. She founded Scratch magazine and Who Pays Writers; she has written for VQR, Nieman Storyboard, Pacific Standard, and others. She is a member of the San Francisco Writers Grotto.

Kima Jones is a 2013 PEN USA Emerging Voices fellow in poetry, a Kimbilio Fiction fellow, Voices at VONA alum, and Lambda Literary fellow in poetry. Kima is writing her first poetry collection, The Anatomy of Forgiveness.

Ayesha Pande is a literary agent who has worked in the publishing industry for over twenty years. Before launching her agency, Ayesha was a senior editor at Farrar, Straus and Giroux. She has also held editorial positions at HarperCollins and Crown Publishers.

Karolina Waclawiak's first novel, How to Get into the Twin Palms, was published to critical acclaim by Two Dollar Radio in 2012. Her second novel is The Invaders. She is currently an editor of the Believer.
