In 2012, San Antonio became the first major city in Texas to establish a poet laureate program. This panel and reading will convene four award-winning San Antonio poets laureate to discuss the unique platform the laureateship offered them for impactful community outreach, their goals as poet laureate, the challenges and breakthroughs they experienced in engaging poetry in public spaces, and their continued literary activism in the community after their term. Each poet will also read one poem.

Moderator:

Jim LaVilla-Havelin is author of five books of poetry, most recently West, poems of a place, poetry editor for San Antonio Express-News and Houston Chronicle, and coordinator for National Poetry Month San Antonio, He received a 2019 City of San Antonio Distinction in Arts, Literary. He is an educator, arts activist, and critic.

Dr. Carmen Tafolla, state poet laureate of Texas, first city poet laureate of San Antonio, and currently president of the Texas Institute of Letters, is the author of 30 books and recipient of the Americas Award, five International Latino Book Awards, a Charlotte Zolotow, and the Art of Peace Award.

Octavio Quintanilla is an assistant professor of literature and creative writing at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas. He is the author of the poetry collection, If I Go Missing. @OctQuintanilla.

Jenny Browne's most recent collection is Fellow Travelers: New and Selected Poems, volume 17 in the Texas Poet Laureate Series. She teaches at Trinity University and is the 2020 Fulbright Distinguished Scholar at the Seamus Heaney Center at Queens University Belfast.
