R183. Innocence and Experience on the Poetry Stage: Beyond Baroque at 50 and Get Lit

Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Venue in Venice, California, is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2018. It has been a place where poetry is written and performed. Get Lit, a much newer organization, focuses on the writing and performance of original poetry and classical poetry by high school students. Together, Beyond Baroque and Get Lit have energized thousands of poets with their renowned workshops and performances. The panel includes reading and discussion of how these two venues work.


Gail Wronsky is the author of eleven books of poetry, prose, and translations, including Dying for Beauty, Poems for Infidels, So Quick Bright Things, Volando Bajito, and Tomorrow You'll Be One of Us. She teaches poetry and women's literature at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles.

Diane Luby Lane is the founder and executive director of Get Lit – Words Ignite, one of the largest teen literacy nonprofits in the nation, and author of the award-winning Get Lit Rising.

Mariano Zaro has published four bilingual books of poetry. His poems appear in the anthologies Angle of Reflection, Monster Verse, Coiled Serpent, and Wide Awake, among others. He is a member of the Beyond Baroque Board of Trustees (Venice, CA). He conducts video interviews for the website Poetry.LA. 

Karen Kevorkian has published two poetry collections, Lizard Dream and White Stucco Black Wing. She has published recently in numerous journals, including Antioch Review, Michigan Quarterly Review, Denver Quarterly, and Volt. She teaches creative writing at UCLA.

Chuck Rosenthal is the author of eleven novels, three books of nonfiction, and coauthor of two books of poetry. He is working on a book on animal philosophy.
