Ask any writer what inspired them to write, and they’ll likely agree that they were a reader first. So what changes about their approach to reading once writers are published? Do reviews by authors carry more clout than reviews by professional book reviewers? How do authors decide what to review when they get overwhelmed with requests, and what happens when authors inadvertently offend another writer through their review?

Pam Houston is the author of five books of fiction and nonfiction including Cowboys Are My Weakness and Contents May Have Shifted. She teaches in the creative writing programs at the Institute for American Indian Arts and the University of California, Davis, and directs the literary nonprofit Writing by Writers.
