Donations to AWP
Dear Friend of AWP:
Recently, AWP has improved all of its services to writers and lovers of literature. We’ve launched a few new services, too.
We expanded our Annual Conference & Bookfair. From 16 events and 1,000 attendees, the conference has grown to include 400 events, 8,500 attendees, and 550 publishers. We have created a lively public event to introduce writers, new books, and small press publishers to people from all across North America.
We expanded the Writer’s Chronicle to include more articles and more news and information, and we increased honoraria payments to the contributing authors. The Chronicle provides many emerging talents with advice and inspiration on how to develop their art. We have doubled the number of pages and features appearing in the Chronicle.
We established the George Garrett Award for Outstanding Community Service in Literature to recognize and reward the great teachers, editors, program directors, mentors, and philanthropists who help contemporary writers.
We established the Endowment for the Grace Paley Prize for Short Fiction. This endowment joins the Endowment for the Donald Hall Prize in Poetry. Our Award Series has discovered and published hundreds of authors, and we intend to make our Award Series the most prestigious literary competition in the country. The endowments have enabled AWP to double the honoraria paid to the authors as well as to improve marketing support for the winning books.
We established the Endowment for AWP Services. This endowment, as it grows, will support AWP’s Career Services, the Intro Journals Project, the Garrett Award, and AWP’s other services for young and emerging writers.
We established hallmarks for successful writing programs and conferences to promote high professional standards in the teaching of creative writing. We established policies regarding academe’s reliance on adjunct faculty.
We launched AWP eLink, a new website that provides up-to-date listings of job opportunities, publishing
opportunities, and grants and awards notices for writers and students. 5,000 students now have direct access to this service.
We have provided a supportive network and community for writers who often feel isolated in their devotion to a difficult and lonely art. We have introduced many writers to one another, as we have introduced many writers to publishers.
With your support, we will continue to build support for writers and good books. We live in a silly, vulgar, and often destructive culture. Help support our culture’s best conscience and most sublime accomplishments. Support literature. Support writers and teachers. Please support AWP.
