Benefit Readers F.A.Q.
What is the AWP Reading Series?
This Series is a fundraising project for AWP. It is also a great way for schools, literary centers, and libraries to contact writers they would like to include in their reading series. If you wish to schedule a reader on the list, AWP acts as an agency to contact the readers and negotiates the terms of the reading for you, the sponsor.
How do I schedule a reader through AWP?
Figure out your budget. With the $600 honorarium, how much money is left for travel, food, lodging, and publicity? Scheduling a reader in your region will save on travel.
List several possible dates. Readers are flexible, but may have other commitments planned. Call us with some alternatives ready.
Pick more than one name. If there is a scheduling conflict, or if a reader is already booked, we can contact another choice more quickly for you this way.
Tell us some details:
- What audience should the reader expect?
- Is there an airport close by?
- Where will the guest stay?
- What is your reading location like?
Why should I use the AWP Reading Series?
This Series offers some of the most important and talented voices available today for an affordable fee. AWP is a worthy organization to support-the only national nonprofit organization cultivating both the appreciation of contemporary literature and the growth and quality of education in creative writing.
What if I don't need help contacting the reader I want to schedule this year? And we have money in the budget for a regular fee?
Using this Series is a great way to help AWP. If you don't need AWP's help, than take this opportunity to help fellow writers, teachers, and students through AWP. If you know a writer who would like to serve on the list, please contact our office.
Can the reader also conduct a workshop or visit a classroom?
No problem. Many of our readers are willing to visit and talk to students as part of the reading or for an additional fee.I'm not familiar with some of the names on the list.
How can I find details on each reader?
AWP maintains a database of biographical information on the authors. Please contact us for the complete list.
The website has links to many of the readers' website and also some pop-up biographical statements.
Have trouble with the details?
We can send you a checklist that will help you plan all aspects of hosting a visiting writer, from the publicity to the podium. Using this Series helps AWP provide services for writers.
The mission of The Association of Writers & Writing Programs is to foster literary talent and achievement, to advance the art of writing as essential to a good education, and to serve the makers, teachers, students, and readers of contemporary writing.
