Strategic Plan 2000 - 2010
This is the introduction to the Association of Writers & Writing Programs Strategic Plan 2000 - 2010. The plan details the goals, objectives, and strategies that the association will pursue throughout this decade
Executive Summary
In the spring of 1999, the AWP Board of Directors created a strategic planning committee. AWP's executive director and the board agreed that the time for creating a strategic plan was ideal. The association would soon complete a four-year business plan, 1996 - 1999, which had strengthened its operations.
In executing that previous plan, AWP had restructured its staff, revised its bylaws, restructured its board, improved its business management, retired a large deficit, established the organization's first cash reserve, improved its core services, developed new services, and expanded its membership. While AWP completed its restructuring, the Board of Directors and staff of AWP began to shape this new strategic plan to define the constituencies AWP serves, to assess the environment in which the association operates, and to direct the association's long-term development. To a large extent, AWP had become a new association in the 1990s. The renewed organization required a new plan. Many challenges faced the organization at the start of the year 2000.
AWP improved its financial position and operations from 1996 to 1999 by relying on a small and efficient staff that was entrepreneurial and reactive. Understandably, the staff was overburdened while AWP created new services, expanded ongoing services, and broadened its membership to include more than one hundred additional colleges, universities, conferences, and centers. AWP now enjoys the demands of success, and this plan establishes goals as well as the means by which to build upon that success. The association must build new resources to ensure its stability, to provide its growing membership with excellent services, and to create new projects for the development of new generations of readers and writers. AWP's Strategic Plan for 2000 - 2010 establishes five fundamental goals:
- To foster a strong community among members and the efficacy of membership in AWP
- To promote excellence in the teaching of creative writing
- To cultivate, discover, and reward excellence in the writing of contemporary literature
- To advance the prominence of contemporary literature in our national culture
- To ensure the long-term stability of AWP
The 2000 - 2010 plan is now complete, providing a vision and strategy for the association's long-term development in concert with its mission. The AWP Board of Directors encourages the members of AWP to comment on this plan. Strategic plans are revisionary documents. A good strategic plan is dynamic, changing to address an organization's changing constituencies and needs.
The Board and Staff of AWP intend for this strategic plan to serve as a platform to focus discussion, solicit feedback, and direct our association towards goals that will be beneficial to our membership and contemporary literature. The AWP Board of Directors will revisit this plan annually, review the comments of membership, and make adjustments as needed.
