2006 Conference Schedule online
The 2006 Conference and Bookfair brought together more than 4,500 students, writers, educators, publishers, agents, and editors under one roof, making AWP’s Conference one of the largest annual literary gatherings in North America.
More than 60 university writing programs, literary organizations, and small presses partnered with AWP to sponsor our Annual Conference in Austin, Texas. Partners such as the Academy of American Poets, The Poetry Foundation, the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses, the University of Houston, and the Michener Center for Writers all participated in our most wide-ranging, diverse schedule yet.
With more than 200 literary events––including lectures and readings by Walter Mosley, Tim O’Brien, Denis Johnson, Tony Hoagland, Jane Hirshfield, Donald Hall, Naomi Shihab Nye, Chitra Divakaruni, B.H. Fairchild, Marie Howe, and dozens of other prominent figures in modern literature––AWP’s Austin Conference proved an integral component of our national literary conversation.
More than 400 literary presses and magazines participated in our annual bookfair, making it our largest bookfair ever. Student involvement in the annual conference continues to grow. Thanks to our sponsors in 2006, 1,000 students had their registration fees waived or reduced.
The satisfaction rate among survey respondents was 97%, with 80% responding that the conference was “Very Good” to “Excellent.” Attendees ranked the bookfair, network of peers, panel discussions and readings as their favorite components of the conference.
